Bergen is a city in southwest Norway, capital of Hordaland county. Bergen is the country's second-largest city, with 278,121 inhabitants. It is also a port city, a university town and a bishopric.

The city is divided into eight bydeler (city districts), the administrative equivalents of large neighborhoods: Arna, Bergenhus, Fana, Fyllingsdalen, Laksevåg, Ytrebygda, Årstad and Åsane. The city center is located in the Bergenhus bydel, i.e. the historic town with a population of around 35,000, while the other towns are only administratively affiliated to the Bergen kommune. It's also worth pointing out that many Bergeners take into account the old, non-administrative names, the strøk, traditional neighborhoods that most often inherited the name of the agricultural estate that once existed there. Bergen is part of the historical (non-administrative) district of Midhordland.

The municipalities bordering Bergen are Lindås, Osterøy, Vaksdal, Samnanger, Os, Austevoll, Sund, Fjell, Askøy and Meland. Together, they cover most of Hordaland, and six of them are island municipalities. Most of Bergen is bounded by fjords: Sørfjord and Byfjord to the north, and Raunefjord and Grimstadfjord to the west.
